Gear & Gimmicks: Designing a Visual Identity for Your Wrestler

Posted on August 6, 2025

By The Armchair Booker

Before the music hits… before the promo starts… before the bell rings… you’ve already made an impression.

In eWrestling, character design doesn’t end with moves and personality. Visual identity — the look, gear, and gimmick — is the first thing people imagine when they read your character’s name. And in a world without real entrances or TV cameras, your words need to paint that image.

Done right, a wrestler’s visual presentation can:

  • Make them instantly recognizable

  • Reinforce their persona

  • Inspire writers, artists, and even handlers in other feds

  • Help readers feel like they’re watching wrestling

Start With the Gimmick: Who Are They?

Before you dress your wrestler, ask: Who are they trying to be — and what are they trying to project?

Gimmick Type Look Inspiration
Antihero Brawler Distressed denim, taped fists, scars
Technocrat Heel Slick gear, minimalist color scheme
Charismatic Showboat Flashy jackets, sequins, sunglasses
Monster Heel Heavy leather, spikes, facepaint
High Flyer Streamlined tights, vibrant patterns
Cult Leader Robes, symbols, cryptic accessories

Color Psychology in Gear Design

Colors tell stories before words ever do.

Color Symbolism / Feel Best For...
Black Power, mystery, rebellion Heels, loners, enforcers
Red Aggression, danger, passion Hotheaded brawlers, intense rivals
Gold Prestige, arrogance, royalty Champions, egotists
Blue Calm, loyalty, professionalism Veterans, fan-favorites
White Purity, redemption, supernatural edge New faces, saviors, mind games
Purple Mind games, mystique, nobility Manipulators, outsiders

Signature Look Elements to Consider

  • Topwear: Vests, jackets, robes, hoodies, entrance coats

  • Lowerwear: Tights, trunks, jeans, cargo pants

  • Boots/Shoes: Classic boots, kickpads, wrestling shoes, barefoot

  • Accessories: Gloves, armbands, masks, sunglasses, jewelry

  • Face/Head: Paint, tattoos, scars, masks, hair styles

  • Logos: Personal emblem, phrase, symbol — can be worn or used in entrance

Entrance Flair — Make the Walk Count

In eWrestling, the entrance description is your runway. Use it to:

  • Reinforce confidence or doubt

  • Introduce visual changes (new gear, new mask, bloodied gloves)

  • Let the music and visual blend into character

“He walks through the curtain in a long, crimson trench coat, dragging the UTA Tag Title by its strap like a leash.”

Leverage AI or Art Tools to Bring It to Life

We're in eWrestling 3.0 now — and visual references are easier than ever:

  • Use AI image generators for renders

  • Commission character art from wrestling artists

  • Use wrestler faceclaims or CAW screenshots

  • Build style collages or Pinterest boards

Tag Teams & Factions: Brand the Unit

  • Choose unified or complementary color schemes

  • Share logos or slogans

  • Match gear types or styles

  • Mix contrast and cohesion intentionally

Gimmick Tips from the Greats

Real Wrestler Visual Identity Key
Finn Bálor (Demon) Face paint transforms persona
Orange Cassidy Denim, sunglasses, minimal motion
Asuka Masks, robes, color explosions
MJF Scarves, ring-ready luxury
Bray Wyatt Masked personalities, props, lighting
Roman Reigns Tactical gear, tribal tattoo dominance

Final Bell: Show, Don’t Just Tell

The best gimmicks live in the details — the chipped fingernail polish, the ripped sleeve, the bandaged knuckle from a fight you didn’t see.

So when building your wrestler’s identity:

  • Think like a wardrobe designer

  • Write like a camera operator

  • Let the look tell the story

Because the best characters don’t just walk into the ring… They make an entrance the reader never forgets.
