Joshua Curtis

From 2013.
OK, thanks for agreeing to spend some time with me today Lets go ahead and begin. For those who may not be sure, who are you and what may they have known you from in eWrestling?
The name is Joshua Curtis and I have been in the hobby for about 18+ years. Among the feds I was in there was two OCWs (Outlaw and Online Championship Wrestling), ENWA/EHCW, GLOBAL, NEON and True Honor Wrestling
How did you first discover eWrestling? Tell us that story.
That was an interesting story because one night back in about 1995 I was on AOL at the time and someone asked me if I watched wrestling and I did so they invited me to come to a fed which was my first time ever doing this sort of thing. Last time I was in anything “wrestling related” was the IWA (Imaginary Wrestling Association) so I had to learn how to do RPs for wrestlers
What are some other notable, or not so notable, eFeds that you have been in over the years that you can think of?
GCW (Global Championship Wrestling) was notable because of the fact it was the first time my “sibling” tag team called “Bloodlines” ever won a tag title
HOP (House of Pain) was a fun fed but the thing about that fed was not long after the tournament for the World title and the Cruiserweight title tournament the fed ended up closing up which kind of sucked honestly.
One fed that was memorable for OOC reasons was a fed called 4WW (4 Winds Wrestling) because not only was it run by a couple BUT it was where I encountered a handler whom was…”different” and I’ll leave it there
What are some other notable or not so notable characters you have handled, if any?
Well there’s my self-titled character (Joshua Curtis) whom held the TV, Tag, Cruiserweight titles
Zack Johnson was a TV champion in NEON wrestling
Tina Davis and Juri and the thing about almost all of the characters in this case was that they were at one point run with the gimmick of being an openly gay/lesbian wrestler because you see I am a full believer that wrestlers like this can be taken seriously if the handler does it right. Too often I see places that have characters like this (or females in general) where the female wrestlers are basically portrayed as being stupid and airheads which accomplishes nothing in the long run
With your time in the hobby, have you ever brought in someone new? Maybe a friend, a cousin, a girlfriend even?
I can’t say that I have no. I have had family ask me about the hobby but no I never brought anyone in
If you could hang out with anyone else youve met in the hobby who would it be and why?
Well there’s Aaron (Spirit Z from THW) just because he seems like a pretty cool dude to hang out with and talk to.
There was this one handler I knew named Lee Jernigan whom handled back in the old Online Championship Wrestling fed that I would have absolutely loved to have gotten to meet to find out how he came up with his promos when I was first starting out in the hobby
Lastly Mat Waters whom handled Karina Wolfenden whom was one of my favorite female characters in e-fedding. The way he wrote her always made me wonder what was going to happen next in the fed with her and I loved that character a lot
In your time in eWrestling, who are some other of your favorite people, that you have worked with?
What’s interesting is that’s a pretty damn short list because in my time there weren’t a lot of people I did like long term angles with but I would have to say that getting to work with Ken Partridge Jr. was probably my highlight when I got picked to be on “The Elite’s” team in the “Showdown in Tokyo” match for GLOBAL. THAT was a special time
Are there any handlers that you have never had the chance to work with that you wish you could?
Go back to one of my “Handlers I wanted to hang out with answer” and Mat Waters only because I want to still perfect my female characters and I KNOW he is one of the best handlers out there to do it with. I have a feeling that I could have learned a thing or two from him and I always hoped it would happen someday
How about handlers/characters that have rubbed you the wrong way? Anyone you just cant stand?
One but its a BIG one!
The man’s name is Adrien Cochrane
Here’s the story:
So its “Honorable Mention” and me and Adrien are supposed to face off in a match. I knew the deadline rule in THW and so did Adrien (or we thought he did) and I posted my RP for my match. He posted his but after the first deadline ended which means he was to lose but because he got political he got me to not beat him and beat a meaningless jobber. If he had taken the loss I think our friendship would have been a lot better.
You mentioned Adrien Cochrane above as being someone who has rubbed you the wrong way, is there anything you think that could ever repair that relationship?
Unfortunately I don’t think there is that possibility with things that I have heard that he has said about me
What are some of your favorite angles or storylines that you have been involved with?
My favorite angle I ever did was actually a “self-angle” with the character “Brandi Sights” whom was the play by play person for GLOBAL. The “storyline” as it were was called the “Sights Interviews” where Curtis (then playing the openly gay character) did some interviews with Brandi to set up his match for the evening against his opponent. The reason that I was allowed to do this angle was because of a “character quirk” that Brandi had but I wasn’t going to use it unless I could find a way to make it work in the story…unfortunately due to OOC issues between me and another handler I wasn’t able to work that out because I was “let go” as it goes in the game before I could resolve it
Is there anything you’ve done that you look back on and wonder why you did it in the first place?
Running heel wrestlers at all.
Now before anyone thinks for a second here that that sounds dumb just think about this:
If you are someone that knows in the real world you are a good person why are you going to try and act like a dick on the internet OOC or IC. If you do that and you can somehow channel it into a character then fine but I never have been able to in 18+ years and I don’t think I could now save for maybe a character I rarely use named Adam Nicholson…that’s about the ONLY way Curtis goes Heel
Are there any other eFeds or sites you keep up with, and if so what interest you about them?
I occasionally come to this site but honestly…no!
See its not that the hobby or writing in general doesn’t interest me because it does but honestly I’m 32 years old and I now work on trying to promote Asian music acts or at the very least trying to bring awareness to them here in the United States.
I can say that this hobby is a lot of fun but there can be a lot of headaches too and I’m just over the nonsense now. I’ve all but moved on and MAYBE if I can either find a good 1 RP fed or an angle fed that doesn’t require a lot of time then I might take an interest again.
I’ve met some people that I honestly call friends and some that were jerks to me on a personal level. To the people that I never got to work with then what I can say is I wish we could have!
How has the hobby changed since you first started? Where do you see it going into the future?
When I first started back in 1995 it was a lot simpler. You didn’t have podcasts or anything like that. It was just you and the community you were in so it was a liot less…exposed I guess you could say.
As for the future? That’s a tough one because you have to find the fed heads that are going to be committed to their places for at least 5 years and in some cases the fed heads seem to get younger so their time can be devoted to other real life things like college.
I don’t know about how its going to change as far as exposure because we have the podcasts and forums but maybe there will be less of those in the future as well. Only time will be able to tell on that one really
How much longer do you see yourself in the hobby?
I’ve all but “retired” as it were. I have so many other things that I do and take care of now that my time that I used to devote to being able to write 2-3 RPs a week is pretty much gone. IF I found a good stable fed that didn’t require a lot of time I could stay in it for a long time but right now I’ve been pretty much done with it
Have you ever considered running, or actually ran a fed in your time? Or have you always been just a handler?
I’ve mostly been a handler. I HAVE had front office positions but my philosophy for booking and writing are very different from the people that have run places.
This doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t think about running a fed but for the most part it would be a “self-contained” place where I’m not stressing over judging RPs every week or two. I just couldn’t do that at this time
Now that the dust has settled a bit, what do you think when you think True Honor Wrestling? For those who are unaware of what happened, do you mind giving a quick run down?
From what I know of the situation Jose (Ryan Dangerous) was found to have been running a lot of different characters and had, at one time, 7 of the last 9 World Champions. I know that people are upset and angry with him and I’ve been in feds where staff had a monopoly on titles in the past.
When I think of THW I honestly think of the fun that I had there honestly. If it wasn’t for THW and Jose I think I might have legitimately given up on the hobby before I got there. It was, at the very least, a brief extension on my time in the hobby.
Well, we’ve covered a lot of topics today. I appreciate you taking time to sit down with me. before we go, is there anything else you would like to say to the readers?
Sure!
It was fun being in the hobby for almost two decades. I’ve enjoyed meeting people and writing with a lot of you. There were people that I haven’t gotten to work with and I wish that I had but sometimes you have to know when its time and I THINK right now its time I go for a good bit.
Maybe I’ll come back to the hobby again if the times right but right now…I’m happy with what I’m doing
See ya gang
