From 2013.
OK, thanks for agreeing to spend some time with me today Let’s go ahead and begin. For those who may not be sure, who are you and what may they have known you from in eWrestling?
Well, my name is Josh. And the characters I’m most notorious for would be The Alpha Dog and Duke Russell from PWS/PWSi respectively. I’ve had tons of different ones but those are the two big ones. Those characters have since been retired and now my main characters you can find me as are Ryan Jeter in PWSi, Kenneth Mathews in Insurgency Wrestling Federation and the owner of Pro Wrestling Project, Josh Duncan.
When did you first discover eWrestling? Tell us the story of how that came about.
It’s kind of a funny story. Way back in 2007, I was in the old WWE Chat room that wwe.com used to have. And a guy recruited me to try it out. I had heard about eWrestling and always thought it was stuid to be honest and that I’d never try it. But I signed up on the fed anyways, just to check it out. After that, I didn’t really have any intentions of looking at it again but one day, I was bored and actually did check it out. I decided, what the hell, I’ll give it a shot. That fed was called PWS and I went on to not only RP there until right now (currently known as PWSi) but I also ran the fed for a good 5 years, just recently retiring from being a fed head there, this year.
What are some other notable, or not so notable, eFeds that you have been in over the years?
PWS which eventually branched off into different brands known as PWSR, PWSi and PWSX. I was in PWSWF for a few years. Millennium Wrestling Alliance is one that I was in for a short stay. I had a very brief stint in UECW. I’m now in Insurgency Wrestling Federation which is going strong. Those are the noteable ones. Not so noteable, honestly I can’t really remember many names. I’d say FOW because that was the first fed I tried opening on my own, back when I was still fairly new to the game and it only lasted like 6 months before I was offered the job of running PWS.
What was the transition like from handler to fed head?
I was lucky because it was a fairly easy and slow transition. I had already been helping with match writing and then when I was promoted to fed head, I had someone with me, helping me out, who had run a fed in the past. Plus the guy that had run the fed, prior to me, was there to help me out for a while. So it was pretty easy, really. I had good help.
What’s the reason for deciding to go with a forum based formula compared to a website platform for your current fed?
Really it was because it’s what I’m more used to. Not to mention, when I used website platfor for PWS, that domain was owned by the original owner. He paid out of pocket to keep it going. And when he couldn’t afford to continue to fund it, he sold it to who now owns PWSi, because I wasn’t interested in buying. The website platform is nice for all the extra stuff but my currente fed is pretty laid back and simple, so the simple forum layout works just fine for me.
With your time in the hobby, have you ever brought in someone new? Maybe a friend, a cousin, a girlfriend even?
Two friends actually. One of them was like me and had the mindset that I used to about E-Fedding, about how it was stupid and stuff. But I told him more about it and eventually he wanted to try it out. He ended up being helping me out a lot in running PWS/PWSR as my right hand man for a few years. Both turned out to be really good at it. My brother also got into E-Fedding but he started like a month or two ahead of me.
Is your brother still in eWrestling?
He is. He does a lot of graphic work, including the logo for my current fed, Pro Wrestling Project. And he RPs there, as well as in PWSi. We’ve both been going non stop since we started, as far as RPing goes.
If you could hang out with anyone else you’ve met in the hobby who would it be and why?
Oh wow, that’s a tough one. After doing this constantly since 2007, I’ve gotten to know a whole lot of people, people I talk to on a regular basis and consider friends. There’s Gary, who competes in PWSi and for my current fed. There’s Alex who runs Insurgency, I’ve known him for several years now after being in different feds with him. It’s always fun talking to those guys. They’re the type to just joke around and stuff and I’m the same way. I get along with so many people that I could seriously sit here and name a good handful of people that I’d probably enjoy hanging out with but I don’t want to get in trouble for forgetting anyone so I’ll leave the list at that haha.
Are there any handlers that you have never had the chance to work with that you wish you could?
Really, not that I can think of off the top of my head. There’s several people in Insurgency that I want to work with but I’ll have plenty of time to work with them. As far as people that I didn’t get the chance to, for whatever reason, there’s not any I can think of. If there was someone that I thought I would have fun working a storyline with, I usually went out of my way to make something happen.
How about handlers/characters that have rubbed you the wrong way? Anyone you just can’t stand?
Not as many as you’d think, with as long as I’ve been around and with as many people as I’ve encountered. There was a guy who ran a character named Blade who really got on my nerves. And a guy who ran a character named Brad Billings who seemed like a decent guy at first but turned in to being a backstabbing piece of garbage. Other than that, honestly, I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head that I can sit here and say that I can’t stand them.
Out of the people mentioned above, would there ever be anything that could be done to repair your relationship with them?
Billings? Probably not. He was the type to start trouble with just about everyone. And he’d talk about you behind your back. He was just one huge headache and disliked by many people. Blade, I don’t hate him. He was just very difficult to work with because he had a massive ego and always thought he should have won every match. Add in the fact that he wasn’t very good so he lost a lot of matches, it just made for a lot of irritating moments for me, having to deal with him. If he had changed his ways and stopped being like that, there’s no reason I wouldn’t give him another chance because that was his biggest flaw.
Any regrets or accomplishments you never achieved in the hobby?
Honestly, I really don’t. Not that I can think of at least. I accomplished a lot in my time doing this. And I don’t really have any regrets because I was never the type to burn any bridges or get on anyone’s bad side, or anything like that. So I don’t have any kind of regrets in that area either.
What are some of your favorite angles or storylines that you have been involved with?
Wow, I’ve had some pretty fun ones that I loved being in but I will pick just one. And that’s an angle that I ran as a character known as Chaz Holiday in PWSR/PWSi and I was taking on Drake DeMarco. Drake was this sex symbol, ladies man, arrogant, egotistical type of character. Chaz was a gay, fun loving, happy, easy to get along with kind of guy. He wasn’t one of the vulgar types of gay characters you tend to see around, he didn’t hit on the wrestlers or anything like that. But the storyline all started with Drake and Chaz going to lunch, because Drake was curious as to what Chaz’s lifestyle was like. Fastforward, something happens that Drake misconstrues as Chaz hitting on him and trying to take advantage of him and it turns into a feud that didn’t truly end for nearly two years
It didn’t go on non-stop because Drake took a break for a while, so there was a space of time where nothing happened. But when he returned, the feud had never been properly settled and taking into account all the time off and on that it went on, it lasted nearly 2 years like I said. Working with him on that feud was the absolute best angle I’ve ever done and was apart of. We just worked well with each other. We both had the mentality of doing whatever was best for the angle and not worried about how good our characters looked. That was just a blast to do and he’s one of my top 2 or 3 favorites that I’ve ever worked with.
Is there anything you’ve done that you look back on and wonder why you did it in the first place?
Besides come up with some fly by night characters that I thought sounded good at the time, only to realized a couple weeks later they stunk? Not really, haha. I never did any storylines or RPs that were questionable in taste or that offended anybody. So I’ve been pretty lucky on that front.
Are there any other eFeds or sites you keep up with, and if so what interest you about them?
Honestly, the only ones that I keep up with are PWSi and Insurgency, since I’m in both of them. Other than that, there’s not that I really follow. I keep tabs on PWSWF here and there because I used to be there for a few years. But really, that’s about it for the time being.
How much longer do you see yourself in the hobby?
I’m not too sure. I’ve asked myself the same thing. Lately, I’ve started slowing down a little bit, not running as many characters as I did once upon a time. But I’m still running a couple full time characters and obviously I’m running a fed now. So I’m still having fun for the time being. As long as I’m having fun doing it, I’ll be involved in it in some capacity.
How has eWrestling in general changed since you first started, and where do you see it going into the future?
From my experience, it’s a lot more story oriented now. Characters’ backgrounds are more thought out and extensive. And that’s not a bad thing. The opposite actually. When I started, it was more just about the back and forth bantering between foes and the storylines and the character development and that kinda stuff wasn’t as much of a focus. Now I think it’s the opposite and storylines and character development have taken up being more important.
Here is your time to shill. Link your fed for our readers who may not know. What big things do you have coming on the horizon? Why should people looking for a new fed join?
The link to PWP is: http://pwpproject.forumotion.com/.
And I’d suggest checking us out because, while I know we’re not the first to do this sort of thing, we’re certainly not the norm either. I do one show a month. In order to compete, all you have to do is sign up monthly. So if you don’t sign up, you don’t get booked. For shows, I use whatever talent signs up. I don’t have a “traditional” roster that I look through and figure out who I book. It’s strictly on who signs up. Every once in a while, I do ‘themed’ shows. The one that I’m currently writing results for, was a one night tag team tournament with the only thing on the line being bragging rights. October’s event, which sign ups are still open for, they close on September 30th, is going to be an all female’s showcase show.
You really just have nothing to lose by checking us out. We come with no commitments, other than whatever shows you want to sign up for. You can show up for one show and never say another word to me again after that and it’d be fine. Also, something that makes us a little unique is, I focus strictly on action and not storylines. So while handlers can only run 1 character per show, you can use whatever character you want, from show to show. Since I’m not focused on storylines, you don’t have to worry about ruining them by not using a certain person. You can use someone different from show to show every time, if you’d like. Also there are long RP deadlines. So, you know, if you’re looking for a place with really no pressure and that’s super laid back, PWP would be a great place to see.
Well, we’ve covered a lot of topics today. I appreciate you taking time to sit down with me. Before we go, is there anything else you would like to say to the readers?
It’s no problem, I’ve had fun. The only thing I can say is just have fun, people. Don’t be so concerned about winning and losing and all of that. None of us, when we first got into eWrestling, got in to it to say we’ve won make believe championships. It was to have fun. I think that gets lost on a lot of people today, who take things way too seriously. Just sit back, enjoy yourself and have a good time. If you’re not having fun, then you’re in the wrong hobby. Remember that this is a game and while it’s ok to be competitive, don’t take it too far. People lose friends and get turned off to this hobby because of people who lose site of the fact that this is supposed to be just for fun and start taking it too seriously.
